Dr. Germana Barata is a research associate of the ScholCommLab and a dedicated science communication researcher at the Laboratory of Advanced Studies in Journalism (Labjor) and the Centre for the Development of Creativity (Nudecri) at the University of Campinas (Unicamp) in Brazil. With a Master’s and PhD in History of Science from São Paulo University, Dr. Barata is a respected scholar who has been awarded a productivity research fellowship in science communication at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) in Brazil.

In addition to her research endeavors, Dr. Barata teaches in Labjor/Unicamp’s Master in Science Communication program and coordinates the graduate Science Journalism course at Unicamp. For her MSc thesis, Milena explored the impact of a novel polyunsaturated fatty acid-based compound, DHA-5-HT, on pro-inflammatory factors secreted by a colorectal cancer cell line. She further expanded her research experience by completing an overseas internship at the Riddet Institute in Palmerston North, New Zealand, where she investigated various protein sources and their effects on human satiety.

After graduation, Milena joined the University of Chichester as a Research Assistant. During her time there, she examined the health benefits of blueberry supplementation in overweight individuals participating in a three-month exercise program.

Currently, Milena is pursuing her Ph.D. at the University of Stirling, focusing on the metabolic effects of omega-3 PUFAs on tissue content and function. This exciting research area aims to shed light on the incorporation of n-3 PUFAs in different tissues and their washout in both young and older participants, contributing valuable knowledge to the field of nutrition and health.

As an esteemed authority in his field, he now holds the title of Professor and serves as the Director of the Tinnitus Clinic in Bad Arolsen, Germany. Here, his expertise in diagnosing and managing tinnitus—a condition marked by the perception of noise or ringing in the ears—has provided relief and guidance to countless patients.

Beyond his clinic responsibilities, Dr. Hesse plays an influential role within various professional organizations.
